Early voting ends Friday, ballot Tuesday

Early voting for the March 2 Democratic and Republican primaries ends on Friday and election day is Tuesday, March 2.

Through Tuesday, 244 voted in Rockdale, 484 in Cameron, 66 in Thorndale and 35 in Buckholts.

That breaks down to 355 Democrats and 225 Republicans, a total of 580 with mail-in and military.

Early voting hours

County clerk Barbara Vansa listed locations and early voting hours for the remainder of this week as follows:

Rockdale City Hall— Through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 12-noon.

Thorndale ISD Administration Building— Through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 12-noon.

County Clerk’s office, Cameron— Through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Pct. 1 Commissioner office, Buckholts— Through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m. to 12-noon.

Demo candidates

Premier race on the Democrat ballot is for county judge where incumbent Frank Summers is challenged by Chip Dunsmoor.

Incumbent Kenneth Hollas is opposed by Donald Shuffield for Precinct 2 commissioner.

Tom Jones, Lisa Rubac Roden and Charles Hundle are seeking the Precinct 1 justice of the peace post being vacated by Dunsmoor.

Jeff Muegge is unopposed for the Democratic Primary nomination for the Precinct 4 county commissioner post being vacated by Burke Bauerschlag.

Unopposed in the Democratic Primary are the following incumbents:

Cindy Fechner, district clerk; Vansa, county clerk; Danica Lara, treasurer; Don Schuerman, Precinct 2 JP; Twila Harris, Precinct 3 JP; Gary Northcott, Precinct 4 JP.

Only Fechner, Vansa and Lara will not have Republican opponents in November.

GOP hopefuls

Cameron residents Roy Martinez and Sam Berry are vying for the Republican nomination as Precinct 2 JP.

Winner will face incumbent Democrat Schuerman in the fall.

Other GOP candidates, all of whom face Democratic opposition in November, are:

Dav id Barkemeyer, count y judge; Buddy Johnson, Precinct 4 commissioner.

Rick Gommert, Precinct 1 JP: Andy Isaacs, Precinct 3 JP; Martin Hobbs, Precinct 4 JP.

Election day

There are 11 polling places on Tuesday throughout the county. See box at left for locations.

The blue registration card will be required for early voting or to vote on Tuesday.
