More candidates file for May 8 area elections
Monday is the deadline to file in area city and school elections and, while several candidates have filed during the past week, there’s still only one contested race in the area.
That’s for a City of Rockdale west ward council seat where incumbent Tom Fisher is opposed by Toby Johnson.
Joyce Dalley has filed for the east ward council slot currently held by J. T. Talley. Talley has not filed for re-election.
Collier Perry remains the only candidate for mayor, a position where incumbent John Shoemake has indicated he will not seek another term.
Candidates may file at City Hall.
School board There are still no contested Rockdale ISD school board races as two incumbents are seeking re-election and one newcomer has filed to replace a retiring trustee.
Place 3 board member Michelle Lehmkuhl and Place 4 trustee Lee Jenkins are seeking new terms.
Wenda Jo Dyer remains unopposed, so far, for the Place 5 position being vacated by James Birkhead, board president.
Candidates may file at the Central Administration Building.
Gail Crawford, Rockdale Hospital District secretary, said all three incumbents have indicated they will seek new terms to the RHD board.
They are: Place 1 (east ward), Larry Jackson Sr.; Place 3 (west ward), Carl Hudson; at large, Richard Burns.
Filing is at Richards Memorial Hospital through March 16, Crawford said.
Incumbents Brian Fisher, and David Hall filed for new terms on the Thorndale ISD board of trustees during the past week.
Deborah Stolte has also filed for school board.
The term of incumbent Trey Gilchrist is also expiring.
Filing is at Thorndale ISD Administration Building.
The City of Thorndale also picked up its first filing as councilman Gerald Niemtschk signed up to seek a new term.
Terms of councilmen Sam Pickett and Jack Willis are also expiring.
Filing is at City Hall.
Two Milano ISD trustees filed for reelection during the past week.
Margaret Plentl and Kevin Love are seeking new terms. The term of Steve Walker is also expiring.
Filing is at the administration office in the old high school/junior-high.
Incumbent Billy Barnett has filed and will seek another term as Milano mayor. The term of councilman Edward Westbrook is also expiring.
Filing is at Milano Civic Center, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. only, weekdays.
