More candidates file for May 8 area elections

Monday is the deadline to file in area city and school elections and, while several candidates have filed during the past week, there’s still only one contested race in the area.

That’s for a City of Rockdale west ward council seat where incumbent Tom Fisher is opposed by Toby Johnson.

Joyce Dalley has filed for the east ward council slot currently held by J. T. Talley. Talley has not filed for re-election.

Collier Perry remains the only candidate for mayor, a position where incumbent John Shoemake has indicated he will not seek another term.

Candidates may file at City Hall.

School board There are still no contested Rockdale ISD school board races as two incumbents are seeking re-election and one newcomer has filed to replace a retiring trustee.

Place 3 board member Michelle Lehmkuhl and Place 4 trustee Lee Jenkins are seeking new terms.

Wenda Jo Dyer remains unopposed, so far, for the Place 5 position being vacated by James Birkhead, board president.

Candidates may file at the Central Administration Building.

They are: Place 1 (east ward), Larry Jackson Sr.; Place 3 (west ward), Carl Hudson; at large, Richard Burns.

Filing is at Richards Memorial Hospital through March 16, Crawford said.
