Skate park damage results in criminal mischief charge
Jerry Don Branum was charged with criminal mischief ($500 to $1,500) and was released from the Milam County Jail after posting $2,500 bond.
“The bridge is obviously not designed to be driven across,” Lt. J. D. Newlin said. “It fell in and there was considerable damage.”
Newlin said no one was injured.
Troy S. Gibson, 37, of Rockdale was charged with theft ($50 to $500) in connection with a 2008 incident in which a television was stolen from Walmart.
“This suspect had been in jail in Humble, serving a term unrelated to the Rockdale charge,” Newlin said.
“We were advised his term there was ending so Ofc. Mike Hoyt went to get him to file the local charge,” Newlin said.
Police dropped a traffic charge after identity theft was proved, Newlin said.
“A man from Victoria showed us that his driver’s license had been stolen and that the traffic offense here by someone using his name and ID could not have been him,” Newlin said.
Police said tires were slashed on vehicles parked along Murray Avenue during the past week.
Newlin said a vehicle was keyed in the Walmart parking lot and fencing was damaged at Duck’s Backstage Music Store on Murray Avenue.
Police said a lamp post was stolen from Antique Queens antique store.
No serious injuries were reported in five wrecks investigated by police during the week.
A pickup operated by Walt Gregory of Rockdale was in collision with a parked vehicle owned by Bobby Joe Tindle of Rockdale at 4:35 p.m. Thursday in the Walmart parking lot . Damages were termed minor.
Minor damages were reported in a 1:54 p.m. Saturday accident in the 200 block of North Main. Drivers were listed as Greg Strelsky Jr. and Shana Davenport, both of Rockdale.
Drivers were listed as Lynette Perkins of Caldwell and Derek Wettstein of Rockdale in an 11:22 a.m. Sunday accident at the corner of Post Oak and Calhoun.
Vehicles operated by Marta Diver and Carl Latino, both of Rockdale, were in collision at 10:29 a.m. Sunday in the Walmart parking lot. Damage estimates were not available.
Moderate to extensive damages were reported in a 7:15 p.m. Sunday accident at the East Belton US 77 intersection at the east city limits. Drivers were listed as Thelma Leighty of San Augustine, Florida, and Tate Pounders of Rockdale.
Citations issued during the past week included 22 for speeding, 13 for no MVI sticker, seven for failure to maintain financial responsibility, three for expired plates and one each for cutting across parking lot to avoid traffic light, disregarding traffic control device, driving while license invalid, expired license, failure to display license, failure to report change of address or name, no driver’s license and no seat belt.
Officers responded to 138 total calls for service during the week, including 75 through the 911 system.
