Milano Opry slated for Saturday at 7 p.m.

MILANO—The monthly Milano Opry will be held on Saturday, March 20, at the Milano Civic Center. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and show will start at 7.

Headliner will be Paula Fleming from Kempner. Special guests will be A. T. Shuffield from Ben Arnold and Bobby Mikulin from Somerville.

Members of the Opry house band are Billy Barnett, Glenn Schneider, Larry Rochelle, Johnny Towslee, John Clark Towslee, Paul Schlesinger and Lynn Martin.

Concessions are provided by the Bailey Bank Building restoration committee. “Come early, eat with us, and enjoy a ‘Big Show in a Small Town’,” said Lynn Martin, publicist.

RVFD, Auxiliary announce scholarship

Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department and the RVFD Ladies Auxiliary have announced a scholarship. Eligible sons or daughters of fire department and auxiliary members may pick up applications for the annual scholarship at the fire station.

Genealogy society to meet here Tuesday

Milam County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 23 in the conference room at the rear entrance to Citizens National Bank in Rockdale.

The following officers for 2010 will be installed: President, Sara Proctor; vice-president, Randy Billingsley; secretary, Judy Matherne; treasurer, Florene McDaniel; newsletter/publicity, Linda Whorton; Patricia McKee, program chair.

CAMERON—Republican Women of Milam County will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 24 at the Budget Host Hotel in Cameron.

Capt. David Sisk, U.S. Army, will speak on the topic, “Iraq and Afghanistan.” Captain Sisk is a graduate of West Point and served in both wars.

New Salem Club offers two $1,000 scholarships

The New Salem TEEA Club will offer two $1,000 scholarships to the Rockdale High School Class of 2010, according to Marilyn Hicks, spokesperson.

One scholarship will be awarded to a senior enrolled n a coll program (junior college or university) to earn a bachelor’s (four-year) degree.

The other scholarship will be awarded to a senior enrolled in a vocational/technical program to earn a certificate of completion or a two-year associate degree. Enrollment may be in a vocational/ technical school or a vocational one or two-year program at a junior college.

“We will accept no less than a 75-grade average score,” Hicks said. For more information call her at 446-2704.

Kountry Squares to celebrate ‘10th’

THORNDALE—Thorndale Kountry Squares (square dance club) will hold their 10th anniversary party on Thursday, March 25 at the Thorndale VFW Hall. Events include a 6 p.m. pot-luck supper followed by a graduation ceremony at 7:30.

Anyone interested in watching a square dance demonstration is welcome, said Jeanne Sparln, publicist.

Hospital Auxiliary announces scholarship

Richards Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will offer a college scholarship next fall to one graduating RHS student who plans on entering the medical field. Students may obtain a scholarship application from their high school counselor, according to Sue Ohlswager, Auxiliary president.

Community plant exchange March 27

Linwood Acres Garden Club’s spring community plant exchange will be held Saturday morning, March 27 on the parking lot of the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce. A variety of cuttings, seedlings and plants will be available free.

Locklin Cemetery Assn. meeting set Saturday

THORNDALE—The Locklin Cemetery Association annual meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 20 in the Thorndale Senior Citizens Center.

Sunshine quilters to meet March 25

Sunshine n’ Shadows Quilt Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 25 at Meadowbrook Baptist Church fellowship hall. Members will continue work on table runners. For more information call Eddie Davidson, 446-6216.

KC’s Lenten fish meals continue each Friday

Rockdale Knights of Columbus Council 7014 members are holding their annual Lenten fish fry meals each Friday through March 26 at the KC Hall.

Serving is from 5 to 7:30 p.m. or until sold out, according to Rodney Barcak, spokesman.

Plates include fried fish, homemade fries, hush puppies, “famous” KC slaw, green beans, tea and dessert. Plates are $8 and available for dine-in or take-out.

New scholarship slated by Crown Garden Club

The Crown Garden Club is offering a new scholarship this year to an RHS senior with plans to study horticulture or a related field.

Application forms are available with the RHS counselors and should be returned to Peggy Cooke, 1001 Cady Road, Rockdale, TX 76567 no later than April 15.

The scholarship will be paid to any accredited two or four year college or university or any vocational technical school.

Cooke said the scholarship will be based on need, academics, leadership and community service and requirements will include a brief essay on the student’s reasons for wanting/needing the scholarship.

Thorndale cheerleaders fund-raiser set March 28

THORNDALE—High school varsity cheerleaders will hold a meal and silent auction fund-raiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28 in Fireman’s Hall.

Donations are needed for auction items, according to Jeni Anders, publicist. “Monetary donations will also be accepted,” she said. Proceeds will help offset the cost of uniforms, camp, and other expenses.

4-H Shooting Sports holding fund-raiser

Milam County 4-H Shooting Sports Club members are selling tickets for two hunts as a fundraiser. Prizes include a $3,000 exotic water buffalo hunt, an exotic goat hunt and a $75 Academy gift card. Tickets are $10 each or 6 for $50. Drawing will be May 15.

Sons of Hermann to meet Tuesday

The meeting of the Sons of Hermann Cameron/Rockdale Lodge 140-2 will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 23 at Bea’s Kitchen, 101 E. Main St. in Cameron. “All members are urged to attend the dinner meeting to enjoy the fellowship and to help honor two members who will receive their 60-year membership pins,” said Willie Korenek, spokesperson.

RELAY FOR LIFE

Canned goods needed for luminary ceremony

Relay For Life of Milam County seeks donations of canned goods to use during the luminary ceremony April 16. “After the ceremony we will donate them to food banks in Rockdale and Cameron,” event chair Trina Edwards said.

Drop-off spots in Rockdale for donations are at Richards Memorial Hospital and The Rockdale Reporter. Donations can also be dropped off at Curves in Cameron. Donations will be accepted until April 15.

Lifesavers team events start with bake sale

Lifesavers Relay For Life team has set four fund-raisers, according to Kim Jeter, publicist.

• Friday, March 19, bake sale in Richards Memorial Hospital lobby, 8 a.m.

• Sunday, March 28, barbecue fund-raiser at Fair Park, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are being presold; those wanting tickets can call Jeter at 512-430-6469.

• March 29 through April 1, a theme baskets silent auction in the hospital lobby.

• April 2, bake sale starting at 8 a.m.

Proceeds from all events will benefit Relay For Life.

Crusaders team sets garage sale

Crusaders Against Cancer, a Relay For Life team in Rockdale, will hold a fund-raiser garage sale, according to team spokesperson Tiffany Davis.

The sale is set 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 27 at 283 County Road 317. It is the first house on the left off the county road that is across the street from Praesel Addition, Davis said. The group plans to sell breakfast items that morning as well.
