RHS finishes second at district academic meet

Fifteen students headed to UIL regional contest

Reporter/Marie Bakken BRENHAM–Rockdale High School’s Academic Team placed second behind Navasota at the District 24AAA UIL Meet held March 23 and 26 on the campus of Blinn College. Fifteen students qualified for the Class 3A Region III meet on Saturday, April 24 back at Blinn, RHS UIL coordinator Donna Scruggs said.

The RHS Journalism team, coached by Linda King placed first with all members advancing to regionals in at least one event.

The number sense team also advanced to regionals after placing first as a team.

The school’s One-Act Play, “The Diviners” was named district alternate during competition April 1 at Rudder High School’s Auditorium.

Andey Perez and Dylan Carter earned all-star cast awards, while Kennedy Cooke-Garza was named to the honorable mention all-star cast. Clayton Merka earned a spot on the all-star crew.

Earning a first through third place in an adademic contest advanced the student to the regional meet. Those placing for RHS at the district academic meet were:

Headline Writing–Aja Brooks, first; Nathan Starr, third; Hugo Ayala, sixth.

News Writing–Hugo Ayala, third; Breanna Miller, fourth; Corolyn Holub, fifth.

Journalism Team–Rockdale, first.

Literary Criticism –Andey Perez, second; Kari Kraatz- Manas, sixth.

Number Sense–Clayton Merka, first; Nick Pelzel, second; team of Andreanna Gonzalez, Clayton Merka, Nick Pelzel and Clay Pelzel, first.

Persuasive Speaking–Ivory Douglas, third; Alejandra Ibarra, sixth

Poetry Interpretation–Ivory Douglas, third; Alejandra Ibarra, sixth.

Prose Interpretation–Kassie Roddam, fifth.

Ready Writing–Sterling Faulkner, third.

Spelling and Vocabulary– Emily Ammon, first; Douglas Mauldin, fourth.

Last year Rockdale won its first academic district title in at least 24 years.
