Sales tax rebates take sharp drop

Sales tax rebates for most area taxing entities fell slightly in April, and yearto date declines show from 10 percent to one third.

Rockdale’s rebate for April was $51,978, marking a small 1.7-percent decrease. Year-to-date totals of rebates, however, are down almost 11 percent.

Rockdale’s rebate decline compares to a statewide average of 7 percent less in sales tax rebates, the Comptroller’s office reported.

Milam’s rebate fell 16 percent, and year-to-date totals are down a fifth.

Apr il rebates are for sales that occurred in February, generally a slow sales month, compounded by a sluggish economy.

Rockdale Municipal Development District collected $10,040, bringing its second month of collections to $18,883. Collections for that entity will increase if a May 8 ballot initiative is approved, moving the half-penny tax collected by the hospital district to the development district.
