Local help available with autism challenges

Dear editor,

After reading the article about autism in The Reporter on autism, I wanted to let you know about Relationship Development Intervention, a program designed to assist parents with their child on the autism spectrum.

Dr. Steven Gutstein, the founder, developed a program that would educate and empower parents to feel more competent and confident. He has developed a curriculum called the “Family Guided Participation Program.” He has broken down the complex dynamic processes into their simplest forms to create the objectives for RDI.

Parents receive education about guided participation and are the first line of defense in the remediation of their child with the help of an RDI consultant. The consultant is a professional who has obtained certification from The Connection Center in Houston.

I completed the RDI Program consultant training program in February. I am an independent consultant offering RDI consultation to families with “The Autism Connection,” (www.theautismconnection. com. See About Terry.)

The Connection Center web site is www.rdiconnect.com. Parents will find more information there.

What impressed me most about this program was the comments from parents who saw their family life improve. Quality of life is one of Dr. Gutstein’s goals for children on the autism spectrum and their families.

There is also five-hour educational DVD in the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library titled: Going to the Heart of Autism: The Relationship Development Intervention Program.

Sincerely, Terry Dennis autismconnection@att.net
