Baseball field, tennis courts lead list; special education needs in district grow
High school baseball field renovation was set in motion by Rockdale ISD school board members Monday, culminating discussions on the matter stretching back nine months.
A $750,000 basic renovation of the RHS diamond is part of $3.146 million in projects the district hopes to implement in two phases over the next couple of school terms. Full Story
Manor’s Acevedo new band director
Adrian Acevedo, band director at Manor High School for the past six years, has been named the new director of the Rockdale ISD’s Big Blue Band.
School trustees unanimously voted to hire Acevedo in an executive session at the conclusion of a lengthy board meeting on Monday (see separate story). Full Story

I have a bone to pick with my oldest nephew Kevin Esten Cooke.
He recently went on a trip to Washington D.C. with the 7th & 8th graders at St. Paul Lutheran School. All the Cookes were hosted to a wonderful meal at Noelia’s house to celebrate his homecoming from the trip.
We dined on sirloin steak shish ka-bobs, grilled shrimp, steamed veggies, salad and green beans. Full Story
‘Relay’ raises $42,145 for cancer fight
Teams brave rain during overnight event at track
Cancer doesn’t stop for rain and neither did the eighth annual Milam County Relay for Life which raised $42,145 overnight Friday in its efforts to help fight cancer.
The American Cancer Society fund-raiser at Tiger Field continued through drizzle and downpours during the early hours, but went on through the night with ceremonies, auctions, entertainment, games and food. Full Story

Lady Tigers earn final playoff position
Taylor is denied its perfect district slate
The scenario was quite simple for the Rockdale Lady Tigers Tuesday night—win and they are in the postseason.

The Lady Tigers (16-11 overall, 7-5 in District 24-3A) will represent the district as the third place team in the state playoffs with Taylor (11-1) as district champions. Full Story

March jobless rate improves
Milam just above national rate of 10.2%
Milam County’s jobless rate showed improvement in March with a 10.8-percent rate. That was down from February’s 11.1 percent rate and January’s 11.7 percent mark. Milam’s unemployment rate in March 2009 was 11.3 percent. Full Story
