Hail, winds, downpour hit Rockdale Monday

Small hail, high winds and a 1.06-inch downpour rolled over Rockdale and South Milam County in a 30-minute storm Monday evening.

Volunteer firefighters responded to downed trees and/or power lines, or power lines on fire, on County Road 410 (twice), the 2000 block of Highland and the 400 block of Calhoun.

Rockdale and Thorndale volunteer firefighters also answered a house fire call at the Gene Sorenson residence on CR 448 at 7:26 p.m.

At 6:32 p.m., during the storm, Rockdale police responded to an accident at the East Belton-CR 333 intersection.

Drivers Elaine Mitchell and Sarah Wedemeier, both of Rockdale, were treated at Richards Memorial Hospital. Damage was termed extensive.

Model plane ‘fly-in’ May 8th at Fair Park

Rockdale’s Fair Park will be the home of a day-long event, filling the skies with giant, radio-controlled airplanes, on Saturday, May 8.

The Ernie Cates Sr. Memorial Big Bird Fun Fly will honor the late Rockdale resident, according to the organizer, Ernie Cates Jr.

“Its sole purpose is to raise money to be donated to M. D. Anderson Cancer Research Center dedicated to my dad,” he said.

Admission to the public is free and food and drinks will be available for donations, he said.

Barbecue sandwiches and sausage wraps will be available, he said. Door prizes will be offered in a fund-raiser.

Flying take-off is set for 9:30 a.m., shortly after the pilot meeting.

“At the last flying event I went to, in Tyler, most of the pilots said the were coming to Rockdale to fly,” Cates said.

Transfer students face May 28th deadline

Parents of students transferring into the Rockdale Independent School District from other school districts are reminded that May 28 is the application deadline for the 2010-2011 school year, according to Dr. Howell Wright, superintendent.

Two years ago, school trustees voted to eliminate the transfer tuition fee.

Transfer forms may be completed by contacting Donna Melcher in the superintendent’s office during regular office hours Monday through Friday, according to Dr. Wright.

RMH Health Fair scheduled May 22nd

Richards Memorial Hospital’s annual health fair is scheduled for May 22 on the hospital grounds, according to Matt Kruse, vicepresident of ma rket ing a nd communications for Blackhawk Healthcare.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 12-noon.

“There will be health screenings, health education, an antique car show and many activities for kids and adults,” he said.

On May 21, athletic trainer Henry (Doc) Hawkins will use the arthoscopy demonstration trailer at RMH for “hands on” demonstrations with local high school students.

Budget committee sets meeting on Monday

The budget committee of the Rockdale ISD school board will meet at 12-noon Monday in the Central Administration Building, according to Supt. Dr. Howell Wright.

Only agenda item is to review and discuss the 2010-2011 proposed budget.

Milano Spring Sweep ahead this weekend

MILANO—The city of Milano will host its spring sweep Thursday through Saturday.

Milano V FD Ladies Auxiliary garage sale at the Milano Civic Center/Fire Station is set for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

On Saturday a mini-rod tractor pull is scheduled with gas-up at 10 a.m. and competition at 1 p.m. “Please bring your lawn chairs as there will be no bleachers,” City Secretary Carolyn Vinton, said. Sausage wraps, BBQ and cold drinks will be sold.

Flushing schedule set for Rockdale’s lines

City crews will flush water lines in Rockdale after midnight May 12, according to City Manager Kelvin Knauf.

“Both east and west sides will be flushed the same night,” Knauf said.

He reminded residents to run their cold water taps upon arising the next morning until streams run clear.
