Former Tiger coach lauds Garry White
I have been a high school football and track coach for most of the past 38 years and during that span I have had the opportunity, and the pleasure of working with many, many outstanding young men both on and off the field.
From 1973-1980 I helped coach the Rockdale Tigers. I can honestly say that I have never coached more likeable, hardworking, committed (there are not enough adjectives) young men than during that span.
One of those young men, Garry White, was and is one of my alltime favorites.
Garry never disappointed me or ever let me down. If there was ever a player that epitomized a Rockdale player it is Garry White.
For years I counted on Garry both in football and track to not only be the “goto” guy, but to be the inspirational leader of our team. He never let me down.
If fact, he always exceeded my expectations. We have cried, laughed, worked, hugged and shared some unbelievable times together. And during those times Garry never asked for anything.
As talented as he was he never expected anything special from his coaches.
Garry is in a tough fight as you read this and as could be expected from him, he is not asking for anything. But I am. It is OUR turn to be there for him.
The very first thing I did was to thank God for the opportunity I have had to know and love Garry, and to ask God to give Garry strength and comfort as he goes through this difficult time.
I, and my wife Pat, will be in Rockdale this Saturday, May 1 to show our support for Garry.
One thing that has always been a constant is the people of Rockdale showing and giving support for it’s own.
God bless you Garry, and thank you for a lifetime of wonderful memories.
We will see you Saturday. Lew Simmonds email@example.com
