Lady Tigers keeping sharp with warm-up contests

Bye round keeps Huffman-Hargrave on the horizon
While waiting on their area playoff matchup with Huffman- Hargrave next week, the Rockdale Lady Tigers kept themselves tuned up by facing a couple of the areas’ playoff teams.

In a TAKS Test shortened game, Thorndale trimmed the Lady Tigers 4-3 on Monday afternoon after putting up two runs in the top of the fourth in a five inning contest.

Emily A lbus prov ided t he offense while Jill Sikes gave the 19th-ranked Brenham Cubettes all the defense they needed in a 5- 1 victory over the Rockdale Tigers at Alumni Field Friday night.

The 16-13 Lady Tigers will host Liberty Hill Friday at 7 p.m. at the RHs Softball Complex.

Facing a Rockdale club that featured former Cubette all-state catcher Kristen Gunter as its head coach and former Brenham head coach Walt Mangan, who led the Cubettes to three state tournament appearances, as an assistant coach, the Cubettes turned to their All-American shortstop and their sophomore catcher.

A lbus scored t hree of t he Cubettes’ five runs and drove in the other two, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning that was a frozen rope over the left-field wall.

Albus added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when she walked, stole second and then scored on an RBI single by Lane Jurden, her second hit of the night.

Brenham, which finished third in District 18-4A, would finish with six hits on the night.

Senior pitcher Kaci Federwisch retired the first eight batters she faced before she got into a bit of trouble, as Rockdale tallied three consecutive singles off of her.

But all three of those base runners would be gunned down by Sikes, who picked off four runners on the night.

Only two of Rockdale’s six base runners ended the inning without being thrown out by the secondyear backstop.

Sikes ended the third inning when she threw behind Brianna Mireles and first baseman Sydney Wellmann caught the ball to her left before reaching back across her body to tag Mireles out.

Then the first two runners in the fourth inning each reached on singles, but Sikes caught Roddam trying to steal, then caught Kelsey Fischer on a delayed steal as part of a strike-‘em-out, throw-‘emout double play.

In the fifth inning, Jill Young singled and advanced to second, but was then picked off the bag when Sikes looked as though she was going to be throwing the ball back to the pitcher but instead rifled the ball to Albus at second base.
