Jones, Dalley, Johnson take council spots

Development district propositions pass easily

  Larry Jones will be Rockdale's next mayor and newcomers Joyce Dalley and Toby Johnson will join him on the city council.

  Jones won the mayoral contest with 314 votes to Collier Perry's 209 and Darrell Grear's 31 votes.  Johnson edged west-ward incumbent Tom Fisher 230 to 220. On the east-side, Joyce Dalley had 76 votes to Roger Whitmore's 24.

  The proposition to abolish the Rockdale Hospital District's sales tax passed 467 to 40. Proposition 1, to create a new Development District encompassing the old city limits, annexed areas and the city's extra-territorial jurisdiction passed 420 to 130.  And, proposition 2 to dissolve the existing Municipal Development District passed 28 to 3.

 In the only other contested race in South Milam County on Saturday, newcomer Dewey Steinbecker will join incumbents Steve Walker and Margaret Plentl on the Milano ISD board of trustees.  Five people were vying for three positions

  Steinbecker garnered the most votes with 82, followed by Walker with 71 and Plentl with 51.  Current MISD school board president Kevin Love lost his seat with 49 votes, followed by challenger Terry Malovets with 44.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
