A fund-raiser for one of Rockdale High School’s most beloved athletes ever, now fighting cancer, raised about $11,000 on Saturday.

Garry White was a key member of the 1976 Tiger state championship football team and the 1977 state track champions.

He is a 1977 RHS graduate and has been diagnosed with colon and liver cancer.

“Our family doesn’t know how to begin to thank everyone who came out on Saturday,” Angela White, a sister, said. “It was a wonderful outpouring of support.”

Teammates

That support included about a dozen former teammates and coaches from the 1976-77 school year, including head football coach Fred Johnson, who drove in from Burnet with wife Martha.
