PIT STOP

Reporter/Mike Brown
PIT STOP Model airplanes have come a long way since the 98-cent Revell kit that needed half a tube of glue. Forty three of the finest flying 3D acrobatic scale models were on display on the ground and in the air Saturday at Rockdale’s Fair Park. Here, Karl Gerthe (center) checks out some of the planes from the Ernie Cates Sr. Memorial Big Bird Fly-In. Fred Cates, spokesman, said over $2,000 was raised as a donation, in memory of his late father, to M. D. Anderson Cancer Research Center. The event drew an estimated 300 onlookers.
