Sales tax rebates up for month

Sales tax rebates were a mixed bag for May, with Rockdale showing a 4.7-percent increase for the month, while trailing 7 percent for the yearto date.

All local taxing entities in Milam County, save City of Buckholts, show drops in year-to-date returns, continuing a trend that began with Alcoa layoffs in 2008.

Collections for the county are down nearly a fifth from 2009.

Local results compare with a statewide average increase of 4.7 percent returned for the month, though returns statewide for the year remain lower by 4.8 percent. In April state collections were up 1.4 percent.

Rockdale Municipal Development District collected $10,665, bringing collections for its first three months to $29,548. Collections for that entity will increase after the May 8 ballot initiative was approved, moving the half-penny tax collected by the hospital district to the development district.

Sales tax data for May is based on sales that ocurred in March and were collected in April.
