Sonntag household served Bell customersDear editor,
Regarding Bill Cooke’s memories about the old days of telephone service, there was a whole generation of Rockdale people, back in the 1950’s and ‘60’s, who thought the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company number was the Sonntag’s home phone number.
It was a time before personal service became extinct. Both my parents, Ann and John Sonntag, worked for “the phone company,” my dad as an outside installer/ repairman and my mother as a service representative in the office with Christine Payne (my mother also worked as an operator on the second floor of that old bank building before dial came to Rockdale, and when it did, she transferred to Taylor and commuted from Rockdale until she got the office job here).
Business hours didn’t much matter to Rockdale people who had problems with their service, questions about their phone bills, etc. They knew if they called our number, they could get quick answers.
