Congressman Carter to speak at Citizenship Day July 12

On Monday, July 12, the Milam County Farm Bureau will sponsor a Citizenship Day for all Milam County 4-H members. The event will help Milam County 4-H members gain insight into the workings of our county government and how our representatives in Washington vote on issues important to the people in Texas. The day will be highlighted with a presentation for U.S. Congressman John Carter.

The program for the day will include:

9 am.—4-H members w ill meet at the Cameron Chamber of Commerce meeting room at 102 East First Street.

9:15 a.m.—Walk to the Milam County Courthouse for a brief tour of the restored historic building.

10 a.m.—Meet with the Milam County Commissioners Court to observe our local government in action.

10:30 a.m.—Return to the Chamber of Commerce meeting room where the 4-H members will meet with Congressman John Carter for an informal presentation and question and answer session.

1 p.m.—4-H members will participate in a Milam County Congressional Insights program by becoming a United States congressman. Congressional Insights is an interactive, computer driven exercise in how congressional representatives make decisions on issues important to the people they represent.

The Congressional Insights program includes a profile of the people represented, an explanation of the issues up for a vote, news releases regarding decisions made by the congressman, fund raising opportunities and town hall meetings with constituents.

At the end of the event, the 4- H members will face re-election to their congressional district. The computer program will determine whether or not they have represented their district and whether or not they have been re-elected by the voters of their district.

The event will conclude at 3 p.m. Milam County Farm Bureau looks forward to your participation in this informative event on July 12.

A 4-H Fun Day for 4-Hers from 5 to 9 years of age will be held on Saturday, June 19 at the Gause ISD gym. Those attending will keep their hands busy with arts and crafts, cooking, gardening, games, cookie decorating and much more. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and things will get under way at 10. Activities will conclude at 1 p.m.

Call the extension office in Cameron, 254- 697-7045 , to register for the fun day so we will have supplies for everyone. Lunch and snacks will be provided. Parents are welcome to stay and join the activities.

Here’s an opportunity to learn about and taste food dishes from India. On Thursday, July 15 host and speaker Yaminie Bhakta will demonstrate several dishes as she shares information on special seasonings and foods. Participants will also be making some dishes to taste. In fact all of your snacks and lunch will be Indian cookery items.

The workshop will be held from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at the Budget Host Motel, 102 Lafferty Ave. in Cameron. Pre-registration is needed by July 12 to prepare handouts and food needs. Contact the Milam County Extension Office to sign-up for the workshop. Leaders and parents can also attend with 4-Hers.
