Alcoa-Steelworkers work toward Monday contract deadline
Alcoa and United Steelworkers continue to meet this week in Cincinnati, Ohio, working toward the Monday deadline when the current labor pact expires.
Alcoa says it continues to negotiate but “continues to prepare for a work stoppage at each of our plants.”
The contract covers 5,400 hourly workers at 10 domestic locations, including about 50 still employed at Rockdale Operations.
There are about 500 USW Local 4895 member classified “on layoff.”
Health care plans have dominated the discussion. Alcoa has offered a new health care plan titled “Choices.”
USW negotiators have rejected the plan, saying the proposal means “giving up the right to negotiate.”
Local 4895 members passed a strike authorization vote May 14.
Troy Hirt, Local 4895 president, and Troy Ackler, vice-president, are part of the USW negotiating team in Cincinnati.
