Memorial Day observance: ceremony, uniforms, jeep

Vietnam-era Jeep, used by U.S. Navy, will be on display. Vietnam-era Jeep, used by U.S. Navy, will be on display. A Memorial Day Observance will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Wolf Park, corner of Milam and Main, downtown.

In addition to military uniforms and weapons from the Civil War through Vietnam, the I&GN Depot across the street will display a Vietnam-era military Jeep with a mounted 50- caliber machine gun. The Jeep is owned by Jimmie Burleyson of Leander.

Names of area servicemen who died in the line of duty will be read. Veterans and local scouts will take part in the ceremony, said Art Free, American Legion Carlisle Post 358 commander.

No school in South Milam (everyone will be out but Rockdale anyway). Financial institutions, post office closed, along with many businesses. No garbage pickup but regular schedule resumes Thursday.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
