Hospital board gets new member, chair

Browning Browning A unique set of circumstances combined Monday to give the Rockdale Hospital District board a new member and a new president at the same meeting.

Terry Browning was appointed as the board’s newest member, replacing Mike Vance.

Carl Hudson moved up to become board president, replacing Dr. John M. Weed III.

Dr. Weed remains as a board member.

Hudson said the state of the board’s financial negotiations with Blackhawk Health Care, which operates the Richards Memorial Hospital and two clinics in Rockdale, led to Dr. Weed’s stepping down from the board chair position he has held since 2005.

“Because of the way it’s structured Blackhawk pays a part of physician salaries,” Hudson said. “We were advised it would just be prudent if Dr. Weed stepped down as president, although there’s no problem w ith him remaining on the board.”

Hudson Hudson Hudson is a former longtime Ro ckd a le ISD school boa rd president.

Hudson had been serving as board v ice-chairman. Board member R ichard Bur ns was appointed to replace Hudson in that post.

Hudson said the need to replace Vance came as a surprise to the board.

“It turned out he did not file for a new term back during the spring filing period when the board election came up,” Hudson said.

Other incumbents did file, there was no opposition and the election was cancelled.

“We discovered we were one member shor t,” Hudson said. “That’s why we made the appointment on Monday.”
