Annual Rotary Club Fun Night set Monday

Rockdale Rotary Club’s annual Fun Night will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, June 28 at Rockdale Country Club, Rev. Jack Chelf, president, has announced.

Following a social hour, dinner will be served at 7 p.m. A brief program will feature awards, including Rotarian-of-the-Year announcement, and the installation of new officers. Cody Caldwell will succeed Rev. Chelf as president.

Milano Jamboree coming up Saturday

MILANO—The monthly Milano Country and Gospel Jamboree will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Milano Civic Center, with all musicians and listeners invited. Admission is free and refreshments will be available, according to Tena Galbreath, publicist.

VFW chicken fried steak meal Saturday

THORNDALE—On Saturday, June 26, the Thorndale VFW Auxiliary will be hold its annual chicken fried steak meal from 11 a.m. until sold out, Marjorie Menzel, publicist, announced.

“This is the same day as the barbecue cookoff in the park,” she said. “We will serve chicken fried steak, new potatoes, green beans, gravy, desserts and ice tea. Come in and enjoy the air-conditioned VFW Hall and a good steak.”

A silent auction will also be held.

Liberty Cemetery meeting set July 4

The Liberty Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 4 at the Liberty Church. “Bring your favorite picnic lunch and dessert and join us for this yearly event,” said Judy York, secretary.

Annual dues of $25 per grave for cemetery maintenance are due. “Costs of maintaining the cemetery continue to rise and the monetary support continues to decrease,” she said.

Persons with family or loved ones buried at the cemetery, or those who have plots reserved, are asked to send maintenance dues of $25 per site to: Frances Gilliland, treasurer, Liberty Cemetery Association, 4856 FM 3242, Cameron TX 76520.

Thorndale Jamboree set Monday at 7 p.m.

THORNDALE—The Thorndale VFW & Auxiliary will host the monthly Thorndale Country & Gospel Music Jamboree at 7 p.m. Monday, June 28 at the VFW Hall, FM 486 North. Doors will open at 5:30 and the music starts at 7 p.m.

The kitchen will be serving sausage wraps, chicken salad sandwiches, homemade pies and desserts and drinks. “We welcome all to a fun-filled evening of entertainment by special guests and our house band,” said Marjorie Menzel, publicist.

Crown Garden Club meets at Hirt residence

Crown Garden Club met at the home of Evelyn Hirt for the June meeting. Co-hostess was Peggy Cooke. Carolyn Burford reported on the Nature Fest sponsored by the Master Naturalists of Milam County, held in Cameron June 11-12.

The program was a question and answer test about various plants, state flowers and state birds.

Refreshments were served to 12 members and the group toured the Hirts’ lawn and gardens with its many plants and water features.

Club members will meet for lunch in July and there will be no meeting in August. Meetings will resume in September at the home of Nancy Marburger.— Peggy Cooke, reporter

Sunshine-n-Shadows to meet on Thursday

Sunshine-n-Shadows Quilt Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 24, at Meadowbrook Baptist Church, according to Eddie Davidson, spokesperson. “We will finish our table runners,” she said. “Visitors are always welcome.”

7-day cruise will boost Milano scholarship fund

MILANO—The Milano Ex-Students Association scholarship committee has set Feb. 6-13, 2011 as the date for the scholarship fund-raiser cruise.

The 7-day cruise to Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel will bring $140 to the scholarship fund for every cabin sold. First deposit of $50 per person is due July 15. For an early saver rate, the entire deposit of $200 can be made and the interior cabin rate is only $476. Regular rate for this cruise is $586 for an interior cabin.

To get credit for this scholarship fund, five cabins must be sold, two people per cabin. Rates are lower for any third or fourth guests in a cabin.
