Annual cookoff draws 64 teams on Saturday
THORNDALE—Ritter’s Barbeque of Point won the brisket and pork ribs divisions Saturday to claim the overall title as the best team of 64 competing City Park.
The annual cookoff is sponsored by the Thorndale Volunteer Fire Department and includes a weekend of activities. Full Story

Rockdale High School’s Golden Girls dance squad broke new records at Showmaker’s Team camp held June 15-17 at Blinn College in Brenham. 1970s leader Gov. Dolph Briscoe dies
AUSTIN — Former Gov. Dolph Briscoe Jr., 87, died June 27 after a lengthy illness.
Briscoe was Texas’ 41st governor. He defeated Frances “Sissy” Farenthold in the 1972 Democratic primary and beat Republican Hank Grover of Houston in the general election. He was inaugurated as governor in 1973, was elected to a second term, and served until 1979. Full Story
