Martin receives Lone Star Awards from Houston Press Club

HOUSTON—Rockdale Reporter Sports Editor Bill Martin was awarded two Lone Star Journalism Awards by the Houston Press Club.

Martin’s column on Cooper’s Barbecue in Llano won first place in the sports story category.

Judges said: “Forgoing the usual sportese of words on play for the more scintillating play on words, this piece was a delight. Surely Friday Night Football is important, but there are other things in life as well. Here we get a glimpse of one of them. Well, crafted, well edited and plenty of unexpected twists. Could almost taste the ribs and beans.”

Martin also took second place in the category for “The Keeper”, his feature story on Rockdale native Mike Korth, who despite his life-long fight against cancer, has maintained a work ethic that has made him indispensable to the University of Texas athletic department.
