Workforce staff doesn't see evidence of exodus from town
More than 21 months after layoffs were completed from the closing of Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations smelter, more than half those who lost their jobs are working again or training for new positions.
According to figures released by Workforce Solutions of Central Texas (WSCT), 415 of the 884 hourly and salaried workers laid off in 2008 and 2009 are working again. Full Story

‘Return to scene’ nets two arrests here Friday
The old cliche about “returning to the scene of a crime” may not be a cliche after all.
Just ask Ofc. S.A. Smith of the Rockdale Police Department.
Smith arrested two Rockdale men early Friday morning after they drove by him on US 79 while he was taking a witness statement at the scene of a theft which was just then being reported. Full Story
Second ‘Gospel Explosion’ here Saturday
Mezzo soprano Dr. Vanessa Beaumont will again headline Rising Star Baptist Church’s “Gospel Explosion” concert, set for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Institute for Teaching God’s Word, 103 Mulberry Street.
Other guests taking the stage include Rickey Johnson, Vann Johnson and the Rising Star choir and praise dancers. Full Story
Band directors due for reunion
What is already shaping up to be a giant-sized reunion of former Rockdale High School Big Blue Band members, featuring three legendary former directors, is planned for Saturday, Aug. 14, in Rockdale.
Bill Grusendorf, Don Thoede and Jim Perry, directors between 1958 and 1985, have all confirmed they will be at The Ranch for the event, which is scheduled for 2 to 6 p.m. Full Story
School board eyes new principal hire
Rockdale High School could have a new principal, technically its third this summer, as soon as next week.
Lee Jenkins, Rockdale ISD board president, said a special board meeting “would probably” be called toward the end of next week. Full Story
Sunday gun death ruled ‘self-inflicted’
Case closed in late-night shooting
Police are terming an early Sunday morning shooting death in Rockdale a suicide.
Lt. J.D. Newlin said police and AMR ambulance paramedics were called to the Brian Caffey home on FM 487 south at 1:46 a.m. Sunday.
Newlin said Caffey, 44, had sustained a pistol shot to the head. Full Story
