Landers

MT. PLEASANT—Laddie Dee Landers II of Mt. Pleasant died Sunday, July 4, 2010, surrounded by his family.

Services were held Wednesday, July 7, at Bates Cooper Sloan Chapel with Bro. Jim Parker officiating. Interment followed at Greenhill Cemetery.

Mr. Landers was called to serve in the armed forces in 1968 and completed basic training at Fort Bliss. Later he was stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, and then Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana where he earned his finance specialist classification, SP4. He ended his tour of duty in Ausberg, Germany. In 1975 he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserve.

Mr. Landers graduated from Mt. Pleasant in 1965. Upon graduation he attended the University of North Texas and later graduated from Texas A&M – Commerce in 1975 where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and served as president from 1974-75.

From the fall of 1976 to June 1977, he taught and coached basketball for Rivercrest ISD. He then began his career with the Texas Department of Human Services as district supervisor for Child Protective Services until his retirement in 1989.

Mr. Landers was involved in an automobile accident in 1988 which left him a quadriplegic for the rest of his life. Although he was confined to a wheelchair, his personality and character were not; he was continuously active with family and friends.

Mr. Landers was a lifelong member of North Ridge Church of Christ.

He is survived by two sisters and spouses, Penny and Robert Luetge, Jeri and Eddie Gray, all of Mt. Pleasant; two nephews, Rick Zachry and wife Dawn of Mt. Pleasant, Joseph Luetge of Austin; three nieces, Deidi Moore and husband Todd of Omaha, Heather Green and husband Jeremy of Carthage, Shea Milhlauser and husband Jonathan of Joaquin; a niece, Cari Luetge of Austin; five great-nephews, Dylan and Jabo Zachry, Zachry and Ryan Moore and Kaleb Chandler; two greatnieces, Ryleigh Green and Gabby Zachry; an uncle, O’Dean Evans of Lake o’ the Pines; three aunts, Thaddius Moore of Joshua, Billie Weatherford of Pittsburg, Marie Smith of Mt. Pleasant; and a special friend and employee of 21 years, Brenda and Charles Smith of Mt. Pleasant; also, a host of relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Adams, Randy Clark, Edward Florey, John D. Hays, Herbie Hogg, Billy Ralph Johnson, Dane Owens, Rocky Russell and Jay Stephenson.

Honorary pallbearers were the members of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, Troy Alders and Allan Bryant.

Memorials may be made to the Thelma Lee Landers Nursing Scholarship or the L.D. (Jabo) Landers Veterans Scholarship, both through NTCC, P.O. Box 1307, Mt. Pleasant, TX 75456.
