Girl Scout leaders train at Burnet; registration ahead
Milam County Girl Scout Service Team members from the Rockdale, Cameron and Milano area attended the Girl Scouts of Central Texas Service Team Conference in Burnet on Saturday, July 17.
The Service Team is comprised of volunteers that “run” the Service Unit and deliver Girl Scouting to girls in a specific geographic area. The conference consisted of workshops team members attended for their specific role in the Service Unit. Attending were Donna Craig, Kristi Pyeatt, Brenda Bradshaw, Amy Crist, Jennifer Horne, Billy Jo Baggerly, Phyllis Countyman and Lori Poehl.
Milam County Girl Scouts will be registering for the 2010-2011 school year for the Rockdale, Cameron and Milano area.
Rally information will be posted soon. Girl Scouting is available to every girl K-12th grade and includes those in private schools and home-schooling. Annual registration fee is $12 and available for both girls and adults.

VFW to host “99” tourney Saturday
Rockdale VFW Post 6525 will hold a “99” tournament this Saturday, July 24 at the post home on US 79 west, according to James Adcock, spokesperson.
“99 is a very fun card game,” he said. “We will have lessons beginning at 5 p.m. so you don’t already have to know how to play. The tournament will start at 7 p.m.” he said.
“There is no entry fee and the grand prize is $100,” Adcock said. “Join us for snacks, friends and fun.”
Relay For Life wrap-up party planned Aug. 2
Milam County Relay For Life will hold a wrap-up party and meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2 at the Citizens National Bank meeting room in Rockdale, communications chair Marie Bakken announced.
The meeting will include awards, prizes, final tallies and re-organization of the committee for the 2011 Relay.
Genealogy workshop set here August 28
Milam County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 27 in the conference room of Citizens National Bank, Rockdale (rear entrance). Jessica York will present the program.
Workshop—MCGS will host a genealogy workshop Saturday, Aug. 28, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lynna Kay Shuffield will present two classes: Genealogy Research & Computers (morning) and Texas Historic Cemetery Designations (afternoon) at Milam County Genealogy Research Center in the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library, 201 Ackerman Street, Rockdale.

Thorndale VFW sets Jamboree for Monday
THORNDALE—The Thorndale VFW Post 4009 and Auxiliary will stage the monthly Thorndale Country & Gospel Music Jamboree on Monday, July 26. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the kitchen serving sausage wraps, chicken salad sandwiches, chips, homemade desserts and drinks.
Music will start at 7 p.m. with the house band and special invited entertainers.
“Bring your family and friends for some good country and gospel music, good food and a good time,” Marjorie Menzel, publicist, said.
Thorndale fish fry to aid Bulldog Band
THORNDALE—A fish fry to benefit the Thorndale Bulldog Band and the Bulldog Band Hut will be held Sunday, Aug. 8 at Thorndale Fireman’s Hall with serving to start at 11 a.m.
Plates of fried catfish, beans, noodles, cole slaw, bread, pickles and onions will be priced at $8 for dine-in or take-out.
Final Youth Cheer signup set Saturday
Rockdale Youth Cheer has extended sign-ups and will be accepting registrations at the City Park from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, July 24.
Parents who took forms to fill out or still need to pay are urged to be at this sign-up in order for their daughter to cheer. This will be the final sign-up and no registrations will be accepted after this date.
