Blackhawk cuts Rockdale personnel '15 to 20 percent' - Free Access
Blackhawk Healthcare cut its Rockdale staff by about one-fifth last week in a cost-cutting move management said enhanced the company’s stability.
Phil Ellett, Blackhawk chief executive officer, said announcements were made Wednesday afternoon, July 28, to employees at Richards Memorial Hospital, Little River Medical Clinic and Family Care Center. Full Story
Council may revise parts of master plan
Rockdale’s Planning & Zoning Board (P&Z) is recommending the city council eliminate controversial “thoroughfares” from the city’s master plan and start over.
That action, on a unanimous 7-0 vote, came after a sometimes intense 90-minute discussion in a public hearing at City Hall Tuesday afternoon. Full Story

CPS board, volunteers serve it up for the kids
Group raises $680 for county’s foster children
Members of the Milam County Child Protective Services Welfare Board and volunteers took orders, served meals, bussed tables and filled drinks at The Ranch on Saturday evening and all for a good cause.
The group was raising funds to help the foster children of Milam County and came out with just over $680. Full Story

Another one crossed off my ‘bucket list’
Last week I got to experience my first high school all-star football game. That was all due in part to Milano’s Matthew Jentsch being selected to play for the South team (which won the gridiron match up 36-23).
It was a fun game to watch, but what was really exciting for me is that I got to cross another thing off my “Bucket List.” Full Story
Football, spiker practices start Monday
Equipment issued at 7 a.m. Monday
With just a month left until kickoff, teams across the state will get pre-season workouts going on Monday as equipment is issued and practice starts up for gridders across the state.
Equipment will be issued at the field house at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2. That will also be the first day of practice with the Tigers working out from 8 a.m. until noon. Full Story

Cooke-Avrett win second straight Open doubles crown
There were old and new faces taking home trophies over the weekend in
the 31st annual Rockdale
Open played on courts at Veterans Park and Rockdale Junior High. The Texas heat did rear its ugly head, causing the delay of one of the Open finals.
Familiar Open favorites, the Avrett family from Conroe, and Wallingford contingent from Franklin took home trophies. Full Story
Work under way at east-side Sumuel Park
We had a great day on Friday as a group of about 25 people worked together to get the Sumuel Park project started. We mowed, raked, pruned and pulled weeds and doing it with a group made it very enjoyable. The community project is the best kind and we are moving forward with the park. Full Story

Leadership Milam taking applications for 2010-11 course
Applications are now being taken for the 2010-2011 Leadership Milam Class to begin in September. This is the second year for this innovative program that is designed to foster a county wide understanding of the leadership needs and opportunities while at the same time building relationships among the members of each Leadership Milam Class.
