Open played on courts at Veterans Park and Rockdale Junior High. The Texas heat did rear its ugly head, causing the delay of one of the Open finals.

Familiar Open favorites, the Avrett family from Conroe, and Wallingford contingent from Franklin took home trophies.

New names like Brown, Loewe, Crump and Patrolia also took home hardware from the tourney and look to be contenders in the next few years.

Buddies Teaghan Avrett and Ryan Gesford, both of Conroe, will battle it out for the open men’s singles title. The two, both Willis High School graduates, postponed the singles final due to the heat.

The two young men also made it all the way to the finals of the open men’s doubles, where they met up with Avrett’s father Truett and Rockdale’s Ken Esten Cooke. Both were standouts at RHS in the mid- 1980s. The more experienced duo of Avrett and Cooke took the open men’s doubles tile for the second straight year 6-3, 6-3.

MacKenzie Brown of Lexington and David Ray Cuebas of Taylor took the open mixed doubles title with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tami Kovar of Thorndale and Zach Wilkins of Taylor.

There was no draw for a women’s singles or women’s doubles division.

Taylor’s Mike and Todd Osborn outlasted the competition for the tournament men’s doubles title.

Loewe then teamed with mom Lisa to take the tournament mixed doubles title.

Younger crowd

Numbers were slightly up in the youth tournament and new faces brought tough competition through the ranks.

Franklin siblings Erica and Brent Wallingford combined to reach three different finals in the tournament this year. The duo won the 18 mixed doubles championship over Rockdale’s Ginny Flores and Hugo Ayala. Brent then went on to defeat another Rockdale foe, Koy Quinney, in the title match of the 14 boys singles. It was Brent’s second time to win that division at the Rockdale Open. He did so in 2009 as well.

Erica reached the finals of the 16 girls singles, but fell to Taylor’s Coty Gola in the championship match. The two met up in the same final last year, but Wallingford bested Gola that time.

Matthew Patrolia of Smithville and LaGrange’s Carlin Zarr took the 18 singles titles. Taylor’s Blake Crabb and Trent Richter were winners of the 18 boys doubles bracket, while Lexington’s MacKenzie Brown teamed with Ginny Flores to win the 18 girls doubles title.

It was an all Rockdale final in the 16 boys singles division where Jacob Crump defeated Nicholas Pelzel. Koy Quinney and Dillon Bankston, both from Rockdale, won the 16 boys doubles bracket.

Autumn Davenport of Rockdale conquered the 14 girls singles bracket. Shelby Thomason and Koy Quinney teamed up to defeat Mason and Kasey Crump in the 14 mixed double final.

Lorena’s Chandler Kramer and Tiernan Avrett of Conroe took the 12 boys doubles at the 2010 Open after winning the 10 boys doubles title in 2009.
