Heat is on for worthy causes in Rockdale

The beginning of August brought our first 100 degree days. We had been spared so far but we knew it was coming. And after all, this is Texas.

Ribbon cutting

We are having a grand opening and ribbon cutting for Patio Pitt BBQ, located on US 79 across from Cocina Familiar at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6. Y’all come for some good barbecue.

RVFD bash

This weekend is the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department’s Summer Bash. Friday and Saturday will be filled with activity from dances to BBQ cookoff, to a margarita and salsa contest. For more information call Brady Nelson at 446-6919 or Blaine Wall at 512-663-2574.

There will also be a horseshoe and washer tournament, free hotdog eating contest for the kids, and a water polo tournament. All profits go to the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department.

United Way needs you

It is time again to start thinking about United Way and doing your part to help the various organizations that benefit from their efforts. All donations, big or small, will be appreciated. Send your check to P.O. Box 189 here in Rockdale.

School supply drive

We are continuing to collect for school supplies and fans for the needy. Thanks to American Legion Post 358, Knights of Columbus, Rockdale Rotary Club, Charlie and Pat Watson, Charles and Gaye Bland and Tom and Karolyn Puccio for their generous donations for these worthwhile projects. The School Supply Giveaway will be done from 1-3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13 at the VFW Hall.

Directory

Curtis Courtney of Morningstar Publishers will start working on our Chamber Membership Directory this week. He will call Chamber members for you to place your ad in the directory. This piece is handed out in all visitors packets and new residents’ packets and is another great way to promote your business.

Until next time I leave you with this: The truth is that devoting ourselves to others’ happiness is actually a necessary condition for becoming genuinely happy ourselves.
