Welcome back home to some new teachers
Denice Doss
Last week was such a busy week here at the Chamber. Tuesday was the new teachers’ orientation and it is always good to meet the newest citizens of Rockdale as they set out to take care of our most precious asset—our children. And it is always gratifying when we see “home folks” come back as our teachers and school staff, which this year included Tanya Mynar, Jessica Gaines, Shelby Weise, Gloria Zapata, Cynthia Ybarra, Kristy Kaufman and Whitney Pounders.

Ribbon cutting

Friday we had a ribbon cutting and one-year anniversary for Days Inn Hotel, located on US 77. If you haven’t been by Days Inn go by and see their beautiful facility.

They have a meeting room for your meetings and a great swimming pool. Call Don at Days Inn for more information on this great addition to Rockdale.

School supply boost

Then on Friday afternoon, the VFW sponsored the school supply giveaway. Thanks to Joyce Hurt and all of her helpers as she lined up a well-organized giveaway that served over 300 school students.

Thanks for donations for this worthwhile cause provided by Rockdale Rotary, VFW Post 6525 and Ladies’ Auxiliary, Tom and Karolyn Puccio, Charles and Gaye Bland and Walmart plus several drop-offs at the Chamber that made this giveaway possible.

I can’t say it enough, but this is the reason small towns are just the best—people dig deep and give for worthy causes. Thanks to all who gave.

Marketing seminar

The Chamber is sponsoring a workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 31 called “Beyond Traditional Marketing.” Find out how to better market your business, organization or event using Facebook, blogs and Twitter.

The use of social media has exploded and what better way to get the word out about your information.

Chamber members are free to attend and non members’ cost is $20. Call the Chamber at 446-2030 for more information.

Garage sale signup

It is time to sign up for the Community Wide Garage Sale. The date of the sale is Saturday, Sept. 4. Call today and get your sale on the map.

Until next time I leave you with this: Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.
