Spikers claw their way back twice to secure victory

Reporter/Cliff Dungan Showing a fight for survival, the Rockdale Lady Tigers fought back not once, but twice to record their first victory of the young season.

The Lady Tigers (1-4) staved off McGregor 25-23, 23-25, 25-9, 18- 25, 15-10 Tuesday night at Tiger Gymnasium.

Rockdale lost the second and fourth games, before surging ahead in the fifth and deciding game against a taller Lady Dog squad.

The production was spread out evenly amongst the players as Katie Strelsky served up eight aces, Hailey Offield worked for nine digs, Kathryn Dodd passed off 13 assists, Lisa Vest put up eight blocks and Victoria Drake buried six kills.

Rockdale participated in the highly competitive Copperas Cove Tournament, falling twice.

The Lady Tigers opened the tournament with a 25-14, 25-11 loss to Class 5A Waco High.

Rockdale then fell to Johnson City in a hard fought match, 25- 21, 27-29, 25-22.

Vest logged two aces and two blocks, while Phillips banged out four kills.

Host C opperas C ove (6 -1) breezed through the tournament with hardly a scratch and claimed the championship after recording five straight victories.

The Lady Tigers take a break from tournament action, travelling to Moody on Friday and then hosting Austin Reagan on Tuesday.

Rockdale hosts its own tournament on Aug. 26 and 28 and in between, hosts Lampasas on Friday, Aug. 27.
