IT WAS ONCE ‘THE KING’


No, not Elvis, the other king, as in “King Cotton.” Corn has overtaken cotton in Milam County but there are still plenty of cotton patches in the area if you know where to look, including along FM 486 and FM 1331 in the Blackland Prairie around San Gabriel and Hare. Last week, the U. S. Department of Agriculture estimated a record Texas cotton crop of 8.8 million bales in 2010. The state also produced more than 8 million bales in 2005 and 2007.
