‘Re-re-zoning’ schedule set for Ackerman, Main
Last October, after a five-month controversy that involved the city council and Planning & Zoning Board (P&Z), a residential section of Ackerman Street was re-zoned commercial to accommodate a business.

Who needs DNA?
Rockdale police made a unique burglary arrest Thursday when sharp-eyed Ofc. Steven Cooper recognized some telltale marks on a local man while serving as bailiff in Rockdale Municipal Court.
Daniel Wayne Tovar, 27, of Rockdale, was charged with burglary of a building and bond surrender on a previous charge of debit/credit card abuse. Full Story
Treasurer race develops as Lara stays on ballot, draws write-in opponent
Milam County Auditor Danica Lara will remain on the Nov. 2 general election ballot as county treasurer.
And she now has an opponent.
Lara issued a statement Tuesday saying she would remain in the hunt to be elected to a new term as treasurer in two months even though she vacated that post in March and hopes to be re-appointed to a new term as auditor. Full Story
Monday’s 108 ties 2009 high
The mercury climbed to a brain-melting 108 degrees on Monday, highest yet this summer.
It also equals the highest temperature of 2009, when the U. S. Weather Service thermometer at KR XT-FM reached 108 four times.
That year Rockdale recorded 62 highs of 100 or more. This year, through Tuesday, 25 triple digit highs have been recorded. Full Story

Distribution of family food boxes is Friday
Capital Area Food Bank will distribute “family food boxes” at 9 a.m. Friday at 811 Burleson Street, according to Denise Sifuentes, spokesperson.
“These are for families with children under 18 living in the household,” Sifuentes said. “This is not a mass distribution.” Full Story
Benefit to help Caffey family
A benefit for the family of the late Brian Caffey will be held Saturday at Nat’s in Milano.
Barbecue plates with all the trimmings, tea and dessert will be available for $10 per plate, beginning at 12-noon. An auction will be held at 3 p.m. with a dance to follow.
