Commission okays first demolitions

Reporter/Mike Brown The Rockdale Building Standards Commission has approved the first demolitions under city ordinances designed to rid the town of unsafe or dilapidated structures.

Meeting last Wednesday at City Hall, the commission okayed orders to “secure, repair or demolish” unoccupied houses at 409 East Fourth, 311 Erie and 311 East Third within 30 days.

The commission also issued a similar order for a structure at 813 Ackerman with a 60- day time limit.

City Secretary Terry Blanchard said the city’s code enforcement officer identifies structures which do not meet Rockdale safety and building codes.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
