Luminant, IBEW in contract talks
Pacts to cover 245 hourly employees
Luminant and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2078 have begun labor negotiations on separate contracts to cover 245 IBEW employees at Sandow Power Plant Units 4 and 5 and Luminant’s Three Oaks Mine.
Ronnie Burrough, Local 2078 business manager, said the two negotiating teams began four days of sessions on Tuesday and will continue through Friday. Full Story
United Way sets $50,000 drive goal
Directors expect UW to meet 2009 requests
The South Milam County United Way has set a $50,000 goal for its 2010 campaign, according to Raymon Puente, organization president.
Eighteen entities will benefit from the 2010 drive, which gets under way in October.
The $50,000 goal is the same as last year’s in a scaled-down post-Alcoa era and Puente says South Milam UW expects to meet that goal. Full Story

Bellamies, Easton Corbin headlining 2010 Fair
The Bellamy Brothers, Saturday night headliners for the Oct. 14-16 Rockdale Fair, couldn’t get away from THAT SONG if they wanted to.
Not that the brothers care to dissociate themselves from “Let Your Love Flow,” a mega-hit they first recorded in 1976 that keeps popping up again and again. Full Story

New date set for fest
Gause Community-wide Christian Music Festival and the Family Life Center Note Burning Celebration has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 2 in the Gause Baptist Church Family Life Center. The singing and celebration will run from 6:30-9:30 p.m. You are invited to come and join church members for this activity. There will be free barbecue sandwiches, chips, tea and desserts served. Defenders take offense to running games
It almost seemed like both teams respective defenses took offense with the attention paid to the offense—the running game in particular.

Milam jobless numbers up slightly to 10.9%
County workforce numbers still declining; state rate 8.4%
Milam County’s jobless rate rose slightly to 10.9 percent in August, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.
Milam’s rate was based on a labor force of 11,149 with 9,937 working and 1,212 out of work.
Milam’s rate increased two-tenths of a point from July’s 10.7 mark. The 10.9 rate is the same as in August 2009. Full Story
