Milam teams win top honors at State Fair contest

Fif teen Milam Count y 4-H Plant I.D. Project Group members made an outstanding showing at the State Fair contest over the weekend, coming home with top honors in the senior and junior divisions, along with other awards.

In the senior division, the team of Taylor McWilliams, Collin Kostroun and Hailee Fisher placed first, while the team of Cheyenne McWilliams, Andrew Stolte, Patrick Cobb and Brayden Hollmon placed second.

The following individual honors were also received by team members: Taylor McWilliams, first place; Cheyenne McWilliams,third place; Collin Kostroun, fifth place; Andrew Stolte, eighth place; Patrick Cobb, ninth place; Hailee Fisher, 10th place.

In the junior division, the team of Karl Woelfel, Kelton Hooker, Chandler Barton and Kaylee Jackson placed first, while the team of Kassidy Hundle, Rebecca Kostroun, Heath Hollas and Neevaj Bhakta placed fourth.

The following individual honors were also received by team members: Karl Woelfel, first place; Kelton Hooker, second place; Chandler Barton, third place; Kaylee Jackson, fourth place; Kassidy Hundle, ninth place.

Thanks goes to the project leaders Irby McWilliams, David Kostroun and Jay Beckhusen and the parents that assist with the project training.

COUNTY PHOTOGR APHY– A total of 43 entries were judged in the County 4-H Photography Contest. The first place winners were submitted for the District 4-H Photography Contest where they will be on display during the Heart O’ Texas Fair in Waco Oct. 8-16. If you are at the fair, stop by an see the talent from around the area.

PIG SCRAMBLE– The Rockdale Fair Pig Scramble is open to youth currently enrolled in school between the grades Kindergarten through 11th grade. Participants must be a member of a Milam County 4-H, Jr. FFA or FFA chapter. Minor’s release forms must be completed and postmarked by Oct. 8. No late entries will be accepted.

What is the pig scramble and ribbon pull? For the scramble, the contestant is required to pull or carry the pig to the designated pen without aid. For the ribbon pull, the contestant is required to pull a ribbon from the pig’s tail and go to the designated area. If two or more contestants catch the same pig, they will both be ordered by the referee to release it. Scrambles and ribbon pulls will be refereed by a group of not less than three referees.

‘4-H STE RIGHT’— Be a part of the 2011 4-H Calendar by submitting a drawing by Oct. 12. The theme for this year’s calendar is “4-H ...Steers You Right!”. Keeton Popham, Milano 4-Her submitted the winning slogan, so now it is time to submit drawing illustrating their 4-H experiences.

Drawings will be judged and the top placing drawings will illustrate the calendar pages. At Celebration Day on Nov. 14, cash awards will be presented to Keeton and the 4-Hers that submit the top three drawings in beginner, junior, intermediate and senior divisions. Submit your entries to the Milam County Extension Office by Oct. 12.
