Critics, county judge exchange words during public hearing
After thousands of words, pro and con, in past weeks about the proposed $16.3-million Milam County budget and 60-cent tax rate, both were approved Monday in a unanimous vote of county commissioners.
That vote was preceded by a 15-minute public hearing in which more words were exchanged, some conciliatory, some confrontational. Full Story

For the second straight year the Rockdale Fair will hold its pageants on the Saturday before Fair weekend and this time t hey ’ ll have some com- pany.

Progress reported in early labor talks
There are a lot of issues still to be determined but progress was reported last week in the opening round of contract talks between Luminant and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2078.
“We’ve exchanged proposals,” Ronnie Burrough, Local 2078 business manager, said. “ They ’ve g iven us one and we’ve g iven t hem one.” Full Story
Flu shots available in Rockdale, county
It’s flu shot season and shots are becoming available throughout Rockdale and Milam County with one big difference from last year’s flu season.
“There’s no separate H1N1 vaccine this year,” Michelle Ferguson of the Milam Count y Health Department said. “There’s one shot.” Full Story
‘New’ MDD takes effect on Friday
Friday won’t feel particularly historic in Rockdale but it will be.
The new Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) officially comes into existence on that date and the old MDD ceases to exist. Full Story

La Escuelita’s annual cookoff here Saturday
La Escuelita will host its 8th annual Menudo, Chili, Beans and Barbecue Cookoff Saturday at the La Escuelita grounds, east of the Rockdale KC Hall.
The cookoff will begin at 6 a.m. and entry fee is $15 for each category. Barbecue divisions are beef, chicken and pork. Full Story
Monday voter signup deadline
Monday is the final day to register to vote in the Nov. 2 general election and Rockdale residents will be able to pick up voter registration forms close to home if they hurry.
Forms are available at City Hall through Friday. Usually voter registration forms are only available at the County Tax Office in Cameron. Full Story
