La Escuelita cookoff coming up Saturday

La Escuelita will host its 8th annual Menudo, Chili, Beans and Barbecue Cookoff Saturday, Oct. 2 at the La Escuelita grounds, east of the Rockdale KC Hall.

The cookoff will begin at 6 a.m. and entry fee is $15 for each category. Barbecue divisions are beef, chicken and pork.

A horseshoe tournament will start at noon with a $10 fee per team. Food sales will begin at 11 a.m. including brisket tacos, sausage wraps and fedio, each $2. Pickles, sodas and water will be one dollar.

Hirt benefit planned at The Ranch Oct. 10

A benefit for cancer patient Margarett Nolen Hirt has been scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 10 at The Ranch in Rockdale.

Brisket and sausage plates with all trimmings will be sold for $8 per plate (dine-in or take-out) and serving will begin at 11 a.m.

An auction of donated items will begin at 3 p.m. Donations for the auction are being accepted at Rockdale Federal Credit Union.

Mrs. Hirt is under treatment for colorectal/hepatocarcinoma cancer. Proceeds will go to medical expenses. For more information call Teresa Mireles, 446-5408.

Band Boosters will meet here Tuesday

Rockdale Band Boosters, for grades 6-12, will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Gatti’s Pizza (buy your own Buffet).

Black Jack VFD to hold ice cream social Tuesday

Black Jack Volunteer Fire Department will hold a fund-raiser, “National Night Out Open House and Ice Cream Social,” from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5 at the Black Jack fire station on FM 908 south.

“This will be a come-and-go event for our community to come out and meet each other and visit the department,” said Jesse Smith, VFD president. For more information call him at 760-6833.

Milam County MOPS plan sale on October 9

Milam County MOPS (Mothers of Preschooler) will host a Momto Mom sale on Saturday, Oct. 9 at First Baptist Church, 240 Green Street in Rockdale.

The sale will include gently-used kids and maternity items, as well as handmade items. Contact Cari Veit at 512-269-8165 for more information or to rent a table.

Admission will be $1 or one canned food item.

MOPS meets each month September through May at First Baptist in Rockdale. Meetings are held from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. in the New Life Center. Breakfast, fellowship and childcare are provided. FMI call 512-269-8165.

Milam Museum plans fund-raiser October 9

CAMERON—The Milam County Historical Museum will host its annual fund-raiser and membership drive from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 at The Mercantile Bistro on the square in Cameron.

The event will feature “The FAB 5,” formerly the Chevelles of Austin, performing music from the 1950s, 60s and 70s rock and roll, R&B and country.

Bushdale Cemetery annual meeting Oct. 2

Bushdale Cemetery Association will have its annual meeting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 at Peace Lutheran Church fellowship hall. Attendees are asked to bring a favorite dish or dessert to share at the luncheon that will follow the business meeting.

Rice Cemetery annual meeting set for Oct. 9

CAMERON—The annual meeting of the Rice Cemetery Foundation Inc. will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9. Attendees should bring a covered dish for lunch and lawn chairs for seating.

Relay For Life sets meeting Oct. 4

Relay For Life of Milam County will hold a committee meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4 at the Citizens National Bank community room, event chair Kim Jeter announced.

Cameron Arts/Crafts Fair slated Saturday

CAMERON—The Cameron Chamber of Commerce will hold its 37th annual Arts & Crafts Fair on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the city park, located on TX 36 downtown.
