The 2010 Rockdale Fair is putting the “youth” in youth livestock sale.
Rockdale Fair Association directors dropped the age limit for participating in the fair’s market division from nine (third grade) to five (kindergarten) this year. Full Story

It didn’t take long to sink in when Kathryn Dodd was announced as the 2010 Miss Rockdale Fair Queen at the conclusion of Saturday night’s pageant in the RHS Auditorium. It was the second year for fair pageants to be held on the weekend before the actual fair. Dodd was first in a field of 17 contestants. First runner-up was Katie Strelsky and Britta Byrd was second runner-up. Full Story
IBEW, Luminant set to vote on pacts
Balloting Oct. 21-22nd at Local Union 2078
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2078 members, employed in Luminant mines and power plants, will vote on new contracts Oct. 21 and 22.
Ronnie Burrough, Local 2078 business manager, said the company and union reached a tentative agreement Friday. Full Story

Brother Kyle in Houston took time out of his busy jet-set schedule and sent in a to-die-for crab cake recipe and I promised him I would share it.
We ate some amazing seafood, especially crab in Savannah and also when we went to Florida. Crab is my favorite!

Strelsky, Byrd runners-up at 33rd annual pageant
Kathryn Dodd, an, 17-year-old senior at Rockdale High School, was crowned Miss Rockdale Fair 2010 Saturday before a crowd of more than 600 in the Rockdale High School auditorium.
First runner-up at the annual pageant was Katie Strelsky and second runner-up was Britta Byrd. Full Story

Williams gets a little closer to home
Former Rockdale star P.J. Williams has moved a little cloer to home, taking a coaching position at Holland, according to mother Robbie.
Williams, who now lives in Temple, spent a year at Sealy in his first coaching stop and will be the head baseball coach for the Hornets, his first love. Full Story
Smithville has an awakening
Tigers put up 41 points against ranked Caldwell
A funny thing happened on Barry Field Friday night.
A Smithville team that had managed just 55 points all year long, found the offensive manpower to post 41 points against a squad that had allowed just 40 in 2010.
Now, the Tigers finally succumbed to the No. 6 Hornets by the inflated score of 59-41, but it signaled an awakening of sorts. Full Story
Navasota hands Tigers fourth straight loss in district opener
New look Rockdale unfortunately produced the same old result.
The Tigers showed a spark and a few new offensive wrinkles which didn’t seem to faze Navasota in the Rattlers’ 36-7 district opening victory Friday night at Tiger Field.
Rockdale dips to 2-4 on the season with its fourth straight defeat, while traveling to 0-6 Smithville Friday. Full Story
Busy times ahead in Rockdale
This is the week of the 35th annual Rockdale Fair. The fair activities began this last weekend with the pageants and team roping. The Childrens’ Pageant went great and the winners were adorable. Great job by Elisha Betchan and her committee. In the evening The Miss Rockdale Fair pageant went off in an elegant way. Miss Texas performed and she was indeed a star. Full Story

Local tax rebates still on the decline
County’s check almost 35 percent less than Oct. ‘09
A declining trend continues in most local taxing entities as sales tax rebates were down in the month of October, according to the Texas Comptroller’s office.
The rebate received by the City of Rockdale was down 11.5 percent compared to a year ago. The Oct. 2010 check was in the amount of $43,190, whereas $48,801 was received in Oct. 2009. Full Story
