Fair Association contributions to park is ‘rest of the story’
Everyone knows, or should know, the Rockdale Fair has raised more than $3 million for area 4-H and FFA youth in the last four decades through its livestock show and sale.

But did you stop and think about the hundreds of thousands of dollars in improvements to Fair Park the RFA has made since the first Rockdale Fair in 1976?

All of it donated to the city for free, projects that didn’t cost any Rockdale taxpayer a penny? It’s worth thinking about. Here’s a partial list year-by year:

2010—Finished electrical work in the barbecue area; built an expansion on the east side of the old livestock barn; upgraded token booth; improved railing between Building 100 and pavilion, bought pens.

2009—Electrical work in barbecue area. 2007—Painted fences.

2006—Placed railings around show barn area.

2004—Improved Building 100; improved concession booths; rails in new show barn.

2003—Planted crepe myrtles; rebuilt token booth; reworked horseshoe pits; purchased Mill Street lots and house.

2002—Resurfaced roads; fertilized ground and trees, painted buildings; installed railing along road; replaced rodeo pens wire.

2000—Livestock area improvements; planted trees.

1999—Office improvements; purchased computer software.

1998—Expanded and covered rodeo arena bleachers; purchased office and audio equipment.

1997—Furnished concession stand.

1996—Show ring and livestock barn expansion; built livestock office, concession stand and restrooms.

1995—Livestock barn fence and gates.

1994—Purchased Morgan property, added women’s restrooms.

1992—Wash rack and office remodeling; concession stand area renovation; livestock area improvements.

1991—Stage extension; purchased Coffield and Brooks properties, plus property from Citizens National Bank.

1990—New women’s restrooms, livestock barn renovations; streets hard-topped.

1988—Drainage work; electric sump pump. 1986—Constructed Building 100; office restrooms, walk-in cooler. 1985—New Fair Park Clubhouse. 1983—New sound equipment and tables.

1982—New pavilion; new livestock show barn; new picnic tables.

1980—Perimeter fence around park; built “blue building” ticket booth.

1977—Original livestock barn expansion. 1976—Race track fence and bleachers.—M.B.
