Clean up around town this Saturday
Denice Doss
Here we are in November. And the fall weather has been delightful. The cool weather and the time change work together to get me into the holiday spirit. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have brought coats for kids—we have received over 80 coats and we still have more coming. We are handing them out as fast as we get them so no child has to be cold. Thanks to the Rotary for this great project and to the citizens for supporting it.

Rockdale Masonic Lodge 414 is working on Bikes for Kids and they are collecting gently used and new bikes to be given to Christmas Roundup. If you have a bike that you would like to donate call Bob Stephens at 446-3993 or take them by his shop at Bob’s Speedy Lube, next to the Chamber. Another great way to support helping our neighbor. And speaking of Christmas Roundup, you can drop off your toys and donations at Citizens National Bank, Rockdale Federal Credit Union, and Classic Bank, Rockdale Signs and Photography and the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce. This is always a good community effort and everyone works together.

Don’t forget about the Citywide Cleanup this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon called “Stash the Trash.” Call the Chamber if you need items picked up or would like to volunteer to help. The volunteers will meet at city hall on Saturday to get their assignments. To take your trash, this time the dumpsters will be at the Fair Park rather than at the City Barn. The chipper will also be there for your tree limbs.

Also on Saturday the Rockdale Historical Society will be sponsoring their Chili Fundraiser at the Fair Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Homemade chili, desserts, eat in or take out and support the museum and all of their renovation projects. The cost of the tickets are $8 and you can get them at the Chamber this week or buy them at the door on Saturday. So after you take your trash to the dumpsters, stop in and have a bowl of chili with the Rockdale Historical Society. And if you haven’t been to the Depot lately it is time to visit it again. They have their Dr. Pepper exhibit up through Thanksgiving so go by.

It won’t be long before we will hear those Christmas Bells ringing. We are changing up our Christmas celebration this year. We will start on Friday, Dec. 3 with a childrens’ costume walking parade, a stroll, shopping in shops downtown, and entertainment. Then on Saturday, Dec. 4 we have arts and crafts all day, entertainment, Santa in the Depot from 1-5 p.m., and the night parade at 6:30 p.m. What fun it will be so start making your plans for Christmas in Rockdale for our “All Aboard the Christmas Express.”

Until next time I leave you with this...Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
