Meals, programs will honor local veterans

Thursday will be a day of honors, memories, fellowship—and perhaps a few tears—for Rockdale area veterans.

Veterans will be honored with two meals and several programs in a day that will feature tributes at all four Rockdale ISD campuses.

The day begins with a free breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. at VFW Post 6525 on US 79 near the western city limits.

“It’s open to the public,” James Adcock, post spokesman, said.

SCHOOLS— Rockdale Elementary School (grades K-2) will begin the day of programs with a 9 a.m. event in the school gym, according to Principal Robin Faulkner.

She said elementary choirs will sing a series of patriotic songs.

Next up is the annual high school program at 10:30 a.m. in the school auditorium, according to Principal Joey Geletka.

Veterans will be recognized and there will be a number of musical presentations and speeches.

LUNCH— Lunch will be provided to veterans and their spouses at 12-noon in the junior-high commons, according to Principal April Eschberger.

Veterans planning to attend are asked to call the junior high at 430-6100 prior to Thursday so cafeteria personnel can gauge how many meals to prepare.

The big day concludes with a new Veterans Day program for Rockdale, at 1:30 p.m. in the intermediate (grades 3-5) school cafeteria.

Principal Pam Kaufmann said a musical program will be presented.

“Also, all of our students wrote ‘thank you’ notes to our veterans,” Kaufmann said.

Principals said all Rockdalearea veterans are inv ited to attend any or all of the Veterans Day activities.
