Enrollment open for Master Gardener class

CAMERON–A new Master Gardener class is set to begin on Jan. 12, spokesperson Jackie Thornton said. The classes meet each Wednesday at the Cameron Chamber of Commerce meeting room from 9 a.m. to noon until May 11.

The program offers a minimum of 50 hours of instruction, including field trips. The fee for the class is $150. and includes The Master Gardener Handbook valued at $75.

Speakers include experts in their fields including lawn care, trees and shrubs, disease and weed management, soils, plant nutrition, vegetable and herb gardening, home fruit production, water conservation and Earth Kind.

In exchange for training and to become a certified Master Gardener, volunteer hours are required. There are a wide variety of activities available to fulfill this requirement and they are easily met, Thornton said.

The Little River Basin Master Gardener Association has an active membership of 50.

Applications are available by calling the Texas AgriLife Extension Service at 254-697-7046, or visiting the office at 100 East 1st St. in Cameron. Deadline for enrolling is Dec. 28.
