Practice space heater safety during winter

With the drop in temperatures, firefighters are seeing more and more fires caused by people just trying to stay warm.

Firefighters are reminding residents that many of these fires can be prevented, if heating sources like space heaters and fireplaces are just used safely.

Some safety tips to follow when warming up your home this winter:

• Keep furniture, fabric and f lammables at least three feet away from space heaters and fire places.

• Never go to sleep or leave a room if a space heater or fire is being used.

• A smoke detector and carbon monoxide monitor should be in every home, especially if there are gas appliances that could produce the poisonous gas.

National Fire Protection Association statistics from 2008 show nearly 500 people died from home heating-related fires. It is a number that can be reduced if heating sources are used safely.
