Land puchase deal with Alcoa for ‘green’ community falls through
Velocita isn’t bringing 5,000 jobs and a “green” community development to Rockdale.
Doug Hutchison, Velocita CEO, told a small, disappointed group of civic, business and school leaders at the Chamber of Commerce Tuesday afternoon the company was unable to reach a deal with Alcoa to purchase 11,000 acres at the former Rockdale operations. Full Story

RHS coach resigns after ‘improper relationship’ charge
A first-year assistant football coach at Rockdale High School has resigned as the result of crimi nal charges filed Thursday alleging an improper relationship with a female student.
Christopher Taylor, 31, was charged w ith “improper relationship between educator and student,” according to Rockdale Police Lt. J. D. Newlin. Full Story
Early ‘present’ as RISD budget deficit vanishes
Rockdale ISD school trustees got an early Christmas present in a noon meeting Friday. The $ 371,294 deficit in the 2009-10 budget has virtually disappeared.
That had been expected but was confirmed Friday when the auditing firm of Lott-Vernon & Co. reported more than $300,000 in budgeted expenditures went unspent and was returned. Full Story
Truck stop ranked top MDD priority
Rockdale’s Municpal Development District (MDD) wants the town’s economy to keep on truckin’.
Literally. A tr uck stop for Rockdale was ranked No. 1 on a list of projects presented by the MDD board.
City Manager Kelvin Knauf said the MDD has made inquiries to Love’s and Kolkhorst Oil, which operates a Rattler’s truck stop in Cameron. Full Story
Roundup, Brown Santa bring cheer to 1,500
Thorndale Cares serves 160 persons
Christmas cheer organizations— mostly the giant Christmas Roundup effort—have made the holiday season brighter for a staggering 1,500 persons this season.
Roundup provided food, toys and some clothing for about 1,400 persons in 400 families, all in the Rockdale area. Full Story
