JANUARY—The 18th ranked Tiger basketball team opened District 24-3A play with two losses after opening the season at 11-1. One of the losses was to No. 10 Bryan Rudder... Milano captured the Rosebud-Lott Classic... Rockdale’s Crystal Callas was named to the Class 3A All- State volleyball team as honorable mention... Milano started its first powerlifting team... Rockdale’s William McQuitter became the Tigers’ all-time leading scorer, surpassing Sonny Givens. McQuitter also pulled the trigger on 46 points against Taylor, third best in Rockdale history... Milano boxer Ryan Karl began his quest for a spot on the Olympic team... Riding an 11-game winning streak, Milano edged rival Thorndale and earned a No. 25 ranking, the Eagles’ first appearance in the poll since 1999.
FEBRUARY— Rockdale’ s Logan David (Blinn), Joe Sanders (Midwestern) and Greg Chelf (Mary Hardin-Baylor) signed letters of intent to play college football... Rockdale was reassigned to a district that included Giddings, LaGrange, Smithville, Caldwell and Navasota.... Cameron slipped down to Class 2A, while Thorndale climbed up to Class 2A... Milano made it through the first round of District 27A play undefeated... The Thorndale Lady Dogs clinched at least a share of their fifth consecutive district title... Hearne’s John Randall was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame... Thorndale trimmed Milano 52-49 to hand the No. 18 Eagles their first district loss... The No. 13 Thorndale Lady Dogs shut down loop play at 10-0 and improved to 24-4 with a 17-game winning streak in tow... The Rockdale Lady Tigers ended the season on a high note with a win over Taylor to finish 6-23 overall.. A loss to Madisonville ended any playoff aspirations for the Tigers who finished 16-16... McQuitter finished the year with a record 740 points and 1,677 for his career... Lance Loewe finished fourth on the list at 1,246 in just three years at Rockdale... Behind tour- nament MVP Riley Schaeffer, Thorndale St. Paul captured the Lutheran Middle School state championship in Austin... Milano defeated Thorndale in a playoff to determine the District 27A champion... The Rockdale softball team jumped out of the gate with a 4-1 mark... The No. 7 Thorndale Lady Bulldogs defeated Mumford 43- 30 for the area championship.
MARCH—Thorndale (18-12) and Milano (24- 7) were both knocked out of the state playoffs in the area round... The Thorndale lady Bulldogs were denied a fourth straight trip to the regional finals with a 43-40 loss to Evadale in the quarterfinals to finish 25- 6... China Spring grabbed the first Bell Rivals Softball Classic... Robinson won its third straight Bell Rivals Baseball Classic... Rockdale reaped the 52nd Rockdale Relays for the first time in eight years, outdistancing Lago Vista 136-116... The Lady Tigers opened district play at 0-2... The Tigers opened district baseball play by mashing Madisonville 13-2... Milano senior Christin Catalina became the first Eagle powerlifter to make it to the state tournament in the first year of the school’s competition... Rockdale track team won its second consecutive track meet at Cameron... Former Thorndale hoops star Brandon Irwin was named to the All-American Southwest first team... A 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Caldwell left the Tigers all alone at the top of the District 24-3A standings at 4-0... Rockdale won its third straight track meet at Lexington...
A PR IL— On April 1, there were rumors that Andy’s restaurant was going to open again... Rockdale sophomore linebacker Derek David was listed as the second-best recruit in the state of Texas for the Class of 2012 by national recruiting service Rivals.com... At McGregor, the Tiger track team sped to its fourth straight meet championship, easily running by the host Bulldogs 120 to 91... Kassie Roddam went 5-for-5 with two home runs and a school-record six runs batted in in the Lady Tigers 18-7 win over Madisonville... The Rockdale golf team bagged its second district championship in the last three years, led by Kirk William’s 152... Tiger mixed doubles netters Joe Sanders and Annie Wilde qualified for the regional tennis tournament, where they fell in the first round... Tiger hoopster Lance Loewe signed up to play at East Texas Baptist... The Thorndale Lady Dog softball team secured its fifth straight playoff appearance... The Lady Tigers’ fifth win in a row, a 3-2 victory over Taylor, allowed them to earn the last playoff spot... Rockdale produced its first district title in track since 2001, sending 18 athletes to regionals... Milano senior Matthew Jentsch was selected to play in the 76th THSCA All-Star game. He was the first player from Milano ever selected for the game... A 1-0 loss to Cameron in the final game of the regular season kept the Tiger baseball team from making the playoffs and finish 12-11... Led again by sophomore Kirk Williams, the Tiger golf team became the first boys team to qualify for the state tournament by placing second in regional... The Thorndale baseball team clobbered Thrall and Bartlett by the combined score of 39- 2... Rockdale’s Lance Loewe was crowned the state’s free throw champion... Daniel Brooks and LeRaven Clark earned trips to the state track meet for Rockdale by winning the 110-meter hurdles and the discus respectively.
MAY—$11,000 was raised in a fundraiser for former Tiger standout Garry White who was battling cancer... Shiner sent Thorndale packing in the first round of the softball playoffs... A rain- shortened tournament ruined Rockdale’s comeback bid at the state golf tournament. The Tigers finished sixth behind champion Texarkana. Senior Waylon Boyd guided the Tigers with a 117, including a sparkling 77 on the first day.... After leading the golf team to the state tourney, coach Earl Gandy announced he was leaving for Granbury. Gandy also took potential starting quarterback and stepson Tyler Wright with him... LeRaven Clark earned a bronze medal in the discus, while Daniel Brooks had to settle for a sixth in the 110-meters after stumbling out of second place at the finish line... Milano freshman Hayleigh LaGrone was named first team All-District 26A in softball... Former RHS standouts and current Texas A& M Corp students Dan and Mark Drake were crowned world champion wild hog catchers at the annual Sabinal Wild Hog Festival and Craft Fair... Winning its 12th straight game, Thorndale f lattened Flatonia to advance to the regional finals... After leading the area round series 1-0 against Huffman-Hargrave, the Lady Tigers dropped a double header on Saturday to end their season at 17-16. Coach Kristen Gunter resigned after the game.
JUNE—The Tigers announced they would not field a 7- on- 7 team during the summer... Caleb “Cricket” Saunders logged two wins in the Bulldogs sweep of D’Hanis to push them into the regional finals against LaPryor... Reporter Sports Editor Bill Martin received two Lone Star Journalism Awards from the Houston Press Club... Thorndale earned its fifth trip to the state tournament in the past six seasons, but was stopped again in the semifinals by Evadale to finish 24-12.
JULY—Tiger teammates LeRaven Clark and Derek Dav id both committed to Texas Tech... Rockdale shortstop Kassie Roddam was named first-team All- State by the Texas Sport Writers Association... Five Thorndale Bulldogs were named to the All- State team... 14-year old Tyson Arledge of Milano lassoed the national championship in goat tying at the Junior High Finals Rodeo in Gallup, N.M... Milano’s Matthew Jentsch participated in the 76th THSCA all-star football game at linebacker.
AUGUST—Hearne’s John Randle is inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio... The hottest day of the year greeted 95 prospective Tiger football players... Former Lady Tiger star Jessica Gaines joined the Rockdale coaching staff... Under new coach Jason Williams, the Lady Tigers dropped their season opener to Lexington... Lisa Strelsky took over the reigns of the Thorndale volleyball program from Julie Downs who left for Marble Falls... The Lady Tigers posted their first win of the year over McGregor... $5,275 was raised at the Meet The Tigers cake auction... Milano volleyball ripped off a 7-1 record to start the year... In a game where the Tigers wore purple uniforms and helmets with the letter “A” on their helmets to honor Aycock’s 1955 state champion football team that was introduced before the game, the Tigers mashed Austin Memorial 58- 0 in the season opener... Thorndale and Milano also won their openers.
SEPTEMBER—Junior Daniel Brooks set a new single game rushing mark by running for 300 yards in the Tigers’ 38-20 victory over Salado. Brooks smashed Emanuel Mack’s previous record of 266 set in 2004 against Manor... Cameron reclaimed the bell with their 35-13 win over the Tigers... In a muddy defensive struggle, Liberty Hill prevailed 16- 7 at Tiger Field... Milano moved up to No. 2 in the state volleyball rankings after improving to 25-7 overall and 4-0 in district action... Hall of Fame sportswriter George Breazeale passes away at age 80... In their worst effort of the season, the Tigers are beaten by an 0-4 Madisonville team 10-7... Thrall shocked Milano, handing the No. 2 Lady Eagles their first district loss since 2007.
OCTOBER—Rogers handed Thorndale (5-1) its first loss of the season, 56-36... Milano lost its second straight, this time to Anderson-Shiro... After a week off, Rockdale dropped its fourth straight, to Navasota 36- 7 in the District 23-3A opener... The Lady Tigers jumped out early for its first district victory over Navasota... The Tigers stopped a four-game losing streak with a 48-7 win over lowly Smithville behind Daniel Brooks’ 269 yards rushing... Milano earned its 10th straight playoff appearance and also posted its 30th win... Former Rockdale star Garry White passed away after a battle with lung cancer, 12 days shy of his 52nd birthday and being inducted into the Rockdale Sports Hall of Honor... In a pivotal district contest, the Tigers rode 324 yards and five touchdowns from Daniel Brooks to out run LaGrange 51-37 at Tiger Field... The Lady Tigers closed out the season with a win over Navasota to finish 8-23.
NOVEMBER—Giddings stampeded over Rockdale 50-13 behind 550 yards rushing... Rockdale’s Juan Rubio stepped off the district cross country crown... Milano disposed of Snook in the first round of the volleyball playoffs... In a must-win game, Rockdale dominated a previously unbeaten and state ranked Caldwell team 38-15 to earn a second place district finish and a school-record fourth straight playoff appearance... At halftime, the 13 new members of the Rockdale Sports Hall of Honor were introduced... Milano senior quarterback Thomas Sanders produced 569 yards of total offense in the Eagles’ 40-20 victory over Granger to earn their first playoff spot since 2007... Round Top- Carmine stopped Milano’s trip through the state volleyball playoffs at regionals... Failing to score in the second half, the Tigers were clipped by Columbus 20-19 in bi-district in Bryan and ended the year at 5-6... Milano posted only its second playoff win in school history by stomping High Island 60-22. The Eagles were dropped out of the playoffs in area by eventual state champion Falls City, 55-7.
