No new houses built for second straight year

City building projects lowest since 2003

A new baseball field and one new business facility were the only major projects for Rockdale construction for 2010, as the industry is still struggling in the nation’s sluggish economy.

There were no new homes built in the city limits in 2010, nor was there in 2009.

Permits totaled $1,891,935, down from 2009’s $2.5 million. The 2010 total is the lowest since 2003.

BIG PROJECTS–A new baseball field at Rockdale High School, which began in September and should be ready for use this spring, and a new location for Michelle Lemhkuhl’s law firm were the two largest projects in the city limits.

The largest amount of construction permits issued in recent years was in 2008 where $30.8 million (a record amount) included the addition of a new campus, a doubling of the high school and improvements at the elementary and junior high for Rockdale ISD.

There was still no action on the land purchased in 2007 from Wal-Mart properties by a developer out of Ruston, Louisiana, who had once planned a strip mall at that site.

DECEMBER– Only two permits were issued last month. Permits are issued at City Hall and reflect only construction in the city limits.

Projects permitted for December were: Butch Malone for Ronnie Wiley, 616 W. Cameron, building; Angela Bermudez, 732 Copeland, portable building. The $14,900 for the month was the lowest in 2010.
