NEW LEADERSHIP—

One of the biggest news stories of 2010 was the stunning success of the Milam County Republican Party. New County Judge Dave Barkemeyer (L), a Republican, was sworn in Saturday morning in the 20th District Courtroom at the courthouse in Cameron by District Judge Ed Magre. Judge Magre was also a newsmaker in 2010, presiding over the Alcoa-Luminant trial during the summer (see story above). Barkemeyer, a former Cameron mayor, unseated three-term Democratic incumbent Frank Summers in November’s general election. Republicans also won three of four justice of the peace races, defeating Democratic incumbents in two of them. Overall, the GOP won four of the seven contested races on the Nov. 2 ballot. Three incumbent Democrats were unopposed. Also see pages 5A and 6A for more swearing-in photos.
