City’s master plan one topic for upcoming economic summit

I am so ready for this new year. As we move forward I want to encourage you to stay positive about our town. I feel like we are on the verge of good things and I know we are all ready for it. So let’s get going into 2011.

One of those ways to get ready is being sponsored by The City of Rockdale. They have scheduled an Economic Summit for discussion of issues for the future for Rockdale. The purpose of the meeting is for the different entities to meet with the citizens of Rockdale and develop ideas that will be used in the City’s Master Plan.

They will be asked to discuss their organization’s roles and responsibilities; provide input to the Planning and Zoning Commission for the economic development plan portion of the Comprehensive Master Plan and discuss ways to become more competitive.

Our economic development organizations include the Chamber, Rockdale Downtown Association, Rockdale Development Board, Municipal Development District, City of Rockdale, banks and lending institutions, Workforce Solutions of Central Texas, developers, realtors, land owners, news media and anyone who is interested in promoting our town.

During the meeting we will work to draft goals and objectives for the future of Rockdale. We will evaluate how we compare with other cities our size and how we can compete with them.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20 at the Patterson Center and will last no more than 2 hours. This is participative, not a lecture, we want your input and ideas. So put the Economic Summit on your calendar and plan to attend.

GED and computer classes are beginning at the Workforce Solutions of Central Texas office here in Rockdale. Call 446-6440 and find out more information about what they have to offer.

At the end of this month, Saturday, Jan. 29, is the Rockdale Police Banquet at the KC Hall. The Chamber is in charge of the silent auction so if you have items for the auction bring them by the Chamber or take them to the police station in town.

This is always a good event that honors our police and awards Police Officer of the Year. The silent auction begins at 6 p.m., the meal is at 6:30, awards ceremony is at 7:30, with the dance following. The band this year is Shawn Jennings. Tickets are $20 per person and are on sale now. Make your plans now to come out.

Until next time I leave you with this.....Remember, happiness doesn’t depend on who you are or what you have, it depends solely upon what you think.
