Sonntag

Funeral services for John E. Sonntag, 85, of Rockdale were held Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Chapel in Rockdale with Rev. Jack Chelf Jr. officiating. Burial followed in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale.

Mr. Sonntag died Tuesday, Jan. 4, in Cameron Nursing Center in Cameron.

He was born Jan. 5, 1925, in Bartlett to Edwin J. and Ora M. (Brooks) Sonntag.

Mr. Sonntag was a graduate of Jeff Davis High School in Houston.

He married Corrie Ann Jones on Jan. 6, 1946, in Houston.

A Rockdale resident for the past 61 years, Mr. Sonntag retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone after 37½ years.

He served as Milam County Justice of the Peace, Pct. 4, for eight and a half years and served on Rockdale City Council for eight years.

Mr. Sonntag was also a reserve police officer for Rockdale Police Depar tment and was named “Peace Officer of the Year” in 1986.

He was manager of Rockdale Little League for 14 years and was member of Rockdale Masonic Lodge No. 414 AF& AM and Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as fire marshal.

Mr. Sonntag was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Beth Beach, and his parents.

Survivors are his wife, Ann Sonntag of Rockdale; a daughter, Dolores A. Sonntag of Rockdale; a son-in-law, John Beach of Deming, New Mexico; a sister-in-law, Sharon Littell of Rockdale; a brother-in-law, John D. Jones of Newton; and a cousin, Mary Ann Goodson of Fort Worth.

Pa llbearers were Thomas Harris, Don Wardlow, Ernest Russell, Bob Dymke, Ernest Hoffmeyer and John S. Beach.

Honorary pallbearers were deacons of First Baptist Church, former members of Rockdale Youth Baseball and American Legion Youth Baseball.
